Birzeit Student Elections: Israeli soldiers 'come to visit'
Magne Hagesater (PAS student at Birzeit University), Right to Education Campaign, 25 April 2006
Wednesday was the day of the student election in Birzeit University . As last year, the Israeli occupation forces came to visit. 6 military-jeeps stopped outside the entrance to the university. Students begun throwing stones and soldiers started shooting rubber-coated bullets and teargas, for about 15 minutes. A student got shot in his arm; he fell and broke his foot. A few got slightly injured. Apparently, this visit is nothing more than to provoke a reaction from the students, and on this day, they will get it.

The student elections in Birzeit are a truly special occasion. Everybody is engaged, everybody is politically conscious. Almost every student was wearing some kind of political symbol the last few days: scarf, flags or clothes. The student-elections here can be compared to a national-day. The students are gathered to celebrate each other, and each others struggle for freedom. The students are also proud of their university: a Palestinian institution that still functions.

The voting stopped at 16.00. Then, each party found their own spot in the university-campus, with sound-system playing music, dancing and political speeches. It kept on like a big party until nine o clock, when they announced the results. The results: Hamas (23 seats), Fatah (18), PFLP (5), 'Student-Union' (2), Islamic Jihad (2), 'Amar al-Qasim' (1).
