Random "flying" roadblocks on the Ramallah-Birzeit Road continue to disrupt life at the University
Report, Birzeit University, 14 August 2003

On the morning of August 14, 2003 the Israeli Occupation Army placed a road block on the Ramallah-Birzeit Road near Surda prohibiting civilians from leaving or entering Ramallah for almost two hours.

A crowd of students, faculty and staff gathered at the taxi station in Ramallah, await developments of the checkpoint. The three Israeli Army jeeps manning the roadblock opened it to pedestrian travel around 8:30 AM and the roadblock was totally removed in the early afternoon after having disrupted most of the classes and work at the University.

Since the removal of the Israeli roadblock at Surda on July 27, 2003, the Israeli army has placed random "flying" roadblocks along the Ramallah Birzeit Road on a daily basis. These random roadblocks last anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple of hours, during which time all vehicle and pedestrian crossing is prohibited.

The random roadblocks act as a constant reminder of the ease in which the Israeli occupation army may reinstitute the severe closures and checkpoints on the Ramallah-Birzeit Roadblock, which disrupted study and work at the University for over two and a half years.
