Al-Hamra Women Residents exposed to Body Searches and Further Humiliation
Report, Birzeit University, 18 July 2002

Birzeit University female students residing in the Al-Hamra residence in Ramallah had to undergo traumatic experience during the early hours of July 17, 2002.

According to Rula Sharqawi, the resident supervisor at Al-Hamra, the Israeli occupation forces came pounding at the door, using one of the male neighbors as a human shield.

Sharqawi obliged, and at the orders of the soldiers, the 16 women residing had to leave their rooms and stand outside, while Sharqawi and a student, besides the neighbor and two soldiers searched the whole residence, going through each room.

Two female soldiers then arrived at the scene, and body-searched all the women, and again, went through each room, this time searching vigorously, turning everything inside out in all the rooms, and breaking the door leading to the guard's room, messing it all up. The Israeli occupation forces left the residence at 5 in the morning, taking with them all the cameras belonging to the students, posters and other personal belongings.

This is the sixth time since March 30, 2002 that the residence is invaded, but the first time that the women undergo body searches and have their personal belongings taken by the soldiers.
