Israeli Army Harassment of Birzeit Students on their way to University
Alert, Right to Education Campaign, 7 November 2005
The four students were pulled out of a taxi and instructed by soldiers to wait at the side of the road. They were not given any reason why. After waiting for four hours, the students were told that they must come back for a 'meeting' at Ofer military base on Monday 7 November. They were warned that if they do not attend this meeting then their names will be put on a list at all military checkpoints throughout the West Bank, a threat that if carried out would effectively prevent them from moving around and make them constantly vulnerable to detention and arrest.

Background to the Surda Roadblock
Overview, Birzeit University, 30 March 2003
The attractive and well-equipped campus of Birzeit University lies eight kilometers outside of Ramallah along a pastoral country road that winds its way through the villages of Surda and Abu Qash. It is the only Palestinian institution of higher education that lies outside of "Area A" (the main urban centers under full Palestinian Authority control within the terms of the Oslo Accords). As such, while students at all Palestinian universities face the daunting challenge of getting from their place of residence to their university due to the ever-expanding network of sieges and closures imposed by the Israeli occupation forces, between 2001-2003 Birzeit students, faculty and staff were faced with a critical extra challenge.

Impact of the Surda Roadblock
Overview, Birzeit University, 21 March 2003
Since early March 2001, academic life on the Birzeit University campus in Birzeit, 20 kilometers north of Jerusalem in the West Bank, has been severely disrupted. Since March 2002, in the wake of the large-scale invasion by the Israeli army into the West Bank, the campus has become virtually inaccessible to the vast majority of its over 5000 students and 700 faculty and administrative staff. The disruption has been the result of Israeli military actions taken on the road connecting the city of Ramallah to Birzeit and 33 villages in the area.
The Ramallah-Birzeit Road: The Path to Progress and Prosperity
Memorandum, Birzeit University, 5 June 2002

The overwhelming majority of the University community members reside in Ramallah and Jerusalem and their only means of reaching the University is through the Ramallah-Birzeit Road.
