  
Surda Roadblock Returns to Block Access to Birzeit University

On Wednesday 21 April 2004, 3 Israeli Army jeeps and at least 8 Israeli soldiers blocked the road between Ramallah and Birzeit University. The roadblock appeared at lunchtime on Wednesday and was still there at 4pm when classes ended, making students and staff concerned about how they were going to get home.

Surda Roadblock is removed

After two-and-a-half years of obstructing the road to Birzeit University, Surda Roadblock was finally removed today. Israeli military bulldozers dragged away the concrete blocks designed to bring a halt to the university's educational activities and to prevent students and staff from getting to their classes. While it is a relief to see it go, everyone knows that it might return at any moment as was the case in July 2003 when the roadblock was only removed for three weeks.

The total closure of the Checkpoint at the Ramallah-Birzeit Road was apparently lifted on October 15, 2003. The Israeli army soldiers who were manning the checkpoint allowed individuals to cross the checkpoint by foot.

Israeli Occupation Forces Close Ramallah-Birzeit Road

On Wednesday, October 8, 2003, Israeli occupation forces closed off the Ramallah-Birzeit road, prohibiting even pedestrians from crossing the kilometer-long checkpoint situated near the village of Surda. Since the majority of staff and students live in Ramallah, they were denied access to the University.

On July 27th 2003 the Israeli occupation forces removed the checkpoint which had been situated on the Ramallah Birzeit Road at the Surda junction since March 2001. The restoration of free travel along the Ramallah-Birzeit road constituted an important and concrete first step towards the reduction of the current tensions in the Palestinian Occupied Territories. On August 21, 2003 the checkpoint was reinstated.

On July 27, 2003 at 9:00 AM the Israeli military army withdrew from the Surda checkpoint enabling free vehicular travel for the first time since October 15, 2001, when the roadblock was removed for only one day.
