'BREAK THE SIEGE' - help Palestinians continue to study

'Break the Siege' is a campaign by the Right to Education at Birzeit University to overcome the hardship faced by Palestinian students and educational institutions, due to the international economic embargo against the Palestinian Government since January 2006. The current financial crisis in the occupied territories is so endemic that it effectively poses a barrier to students' right to education by depriving them of the ability to attend university or depriving them of the adequate standards of teaching, facilities and environment provided by the university.

CALL TO ACTION: Defend the right to enter, study and teach in Palestine

Since the beginning of 2006, many thousands of Palestinian foreign passport holders have been denied entry to visit, work or study in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt). This policy has brought tremendous insecurity to the university and its financial and academic well being. There has been a 50% drop in foreign passport holding staff from March to September 2006, leaving most departments at the risk of being forced to drop courses and lose irreplaceable lecturers on specialist areas. One department in particular risks losing up to 70% of its staff.

Presidents of Palestinian institutions of higher education bring to the fore an alarming yet unannounced Israeli policy that affects our society in the West Bank and Gaza Strip at large, and education in particular: the denial of entry, re-entry, and continuous residence to foreign passport holding Palestinians and non-Palestinian family members, lecturers, NGO workers, and international development experts.
