  
Wave of arrests at Birzeit University

Since January 2008, eight Birzeit University students and one employee have been arrested by the Israeli army. None of whom have been charged. This comes amongst a wave of arrests all over the West Bank under the pretext of the person belonging to a political party.

Fadi Hamad, the head of Birzeit University student council has been charged with belonging to an illegal organization and holding a position of responsibility while belonging to this organization. He is currently held in Ofer prison, and will be incarcerated for at least 1 yr on what is basically a legalistic means to punish young Palestinians engaged in political activity.

On Sunday 2 December 2007, Fadi Hamad, the head of Birzeit Student Council was taken to a military court where he was accused of holding a position of responsibility within an 'illegal' organization.

On Sunday 25 November 2007, Israeli military Special Forces abducted Fadi Hamad, the head of the Birzeit University Student Council.

Student arrests, especially those under 'Administrative Detention' amount to a breach of the internationally recognized 'right to education', first enshrined in Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and promoted by numerous UN bodies and conventions such as UNESCO, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Update from Al Haq on the case of Birzeit University student and human rights defender, Ziyad Hmeidan. Yesterday, Ziyad's administrative detention order was extended for a further four months. This will mean that by the time of his newly scheduled release date in July 2006, he will have spent over a year in detention without charge or trial. Al-Haq demands his immediate release.

Amnesty International Appeal for Birzeit Student Walid Hanatche

Walid Hanatche has been detained without charge or trial since May 2002, has been put under pressure by the Israeli authorities to accept deportation to an unspecified country or face the possibility of remaining in administrative detention indefinitely. Amnesty International is concerned that the Israeli authorities intend to use this as a test case, and that if they succeed in deporting Walid Hanatche they may deport more Palestinians.
