International Article Highlights Palestinians Struggle Against “Scholasticide”
The renowned magazine Hammer & Hope has published an article entitled “Palestinians’ Fight Against Scholasticide Fuels the Struggle for Freedom”, which sheds light on the systematic destruction on education in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, framing them as a form of war on the future and on the right to education.
The article features contributions from Sundos Hammad, Coordinator of the Right to Education Campaign at Birzeit University, alongside Dr. Abdul Razzaq Takriti (Rice University), a leading Palestinian historian, Dr. Donna Murch (Rutgers University), an American scholar, and Dr. Ahmed Shokr (Swarthmore College), an Egyptian scholar.
In her contribution, Hammad emphasized the vital role Palestinian universities play in documenting these violations and defending the right of students and academics to learn about their history and a knowledge that liberates the people. She underlined that the systematic targeting of educational institutions, especially higher education, is a deliberate attempt to undermine Palestinian resilience, deprive communities of the tools of liberation and development, and perpetuate the colonial status quo.
The piece underscores that assaults on Palestinian education go beyond direct strikes on schools and universities. They extend to systematic policies aimed at crippling the entire educational infrastructure, restricting freedom of movement, and denying students and academics their academic freedom, practices that constitute what is now widely described as “scholasticide”.
