Birzeit University’s Right to Education (R2E) Campaign participated remotely in the National Student Conference for Palestine held in the United Kingdom on March 10, 2026, contributing to critical discussions on the ongoing systematic violations of Palestinian students’ right to education and the role of international solidarity in confronting them.
Mohammad Huruieni, a student volunteer at the R2E Campaign and a human rights defender from Masafer Yatta, delivered an intervention highlighting the systematic policies used by the Israeli occupation to undermine Palestinian education. He addressed the impact of movement restrictions, systematic attacks on educational institutions, and the imposition of a coercive environment aimed at marginalizing education and weakening the awareness of younger generations.
Huruieni emphasized that education fundamentally challenges systems of colonial domination and dependency, as it cultivates a conscious generation capable of understanding its reality and resisting injustice. Drawing on his lived experience in Masafer Yatta, he described the constant threat of displacement and settler violence faced by Palestinian communities, with a particular focus on the determination of youth and children who continue to pursue their education despite all odds.
He concluded by stressing the importance of connecting the Palestinian struggle to broader global movements for justice, calling for expanded solidarity efforts and increased pressure on governments to hold the Israeli occupation accountable and end international complicity in the crimes committed against Palestinian people.
Misk Mousa, who is also a student volunteer with the R2E Campaign, participated in a panel addressing the everyday realities of Palestinian students and academics. Her contribution focused on the structural obstacles imposed by the occupation, including unpredictable checkpoint closures and frequent raids on Palestinian universities, which severely disrupt academic life.
She also highlighted the psychological impact of these conditions, noting that students are regularly exposed to traumatic incidents such as arrests, being shot, or even killed by the Israeli Occupation. These experiences, she emphasized, not only hinder educational access but also affect students’ mental well-being and sense of safety.
The panel concluded with a call to strengthen international solidarity networks to challenge the criminalization of education in Palestine, and to reinforce collective efforts aimed at protecting academic freedom and supporting Palestinian students and institutions.
This participation reflects Birzeit University’s continued commitment, through the Right to Education Campaign, to documenting violations, amplifying Palestinian voices, and advancing global advocacy for the protection of the right to education.
