Shortage of classrooms lead to a sharp increase in dropout rate among Palestinian students in Jerusalem

Al-Maqdese submitted an urgent petition to the Israeli Central Court against West Jerusalem Municipality and Israeli Ministry of Education

After the intensive and daily work by Al-Maqdese Legal Clinic lawyers for more than 4 months to oblige Jerusalem Municipality carries out its responsibilities to offer school seats to Jerusalemites students for the year 2010-2011, and after using all negotiation ways with Jerusalem Municipality to offer school seats for 19 students (who are not on their school seats according to the lack of class rooms in East Jerusalem) according to the law till 18/09/2010, Al-Maqdese submitted an administrative urgent petition to the Israeli Central Court on 19/09/2010 against West Jerusalem Municipality and Israeli Ministry of Education. This comes under Al-Maqdese campaign “Right to education for all”. During the campaign period Al-Maqdese succeeded in offering 94 school seats for 94 Jerusalemites students coalitioning with several organizations and parents committees from Jerusalem.
Depending on published statistics concerning this issue: East Jerusalem suffers from a shortage of classrooms of more than 1,000 units which resulted in increasing the school drop- out rate to reach 45%.
